Sveti Roko Banquet in 1931 (photo from Kata Patton)

A Bit of History

In the early decades of the Lumbarda Club, the Sveti Roko banquets were highly organized and well attended gatherings. The photo here, from the 1931 banquet, illustrates that very well.

In recent years, so many of our members have passed on and other member families have moved far from the Bay Area. We have very few members left who were born in Lumbarda, most of us are descendants. Our gatherings have been smaller and far less formal, but no less full of heart for the heritage that connects us all through the Lumbarda Club.

Historical Presentation

Teri Huntington has prepared a program going back to the first Lumbarda Club meeting 100 years ago, with excerpts from the minutes of that first meeting. She has collected stories from the early years, “the West Oakland days,” stories on how the Lumbarda Club became the Lumbarda Social Club, with a change of purpose about 50 years ago (back from the time when Teri was the club treasurer). Jane Tabor and Kathy Kriletich Urban have been assisting Teri in collecting material for this presentation.

You can also contribute to this historical sharing by bringing old photo albums, scrapbooks, programs and other memorabilia to this year’s gathering.

Commemorative Glass

Garry Tabor has generously donated 100 drinking glasses etched with the words “Lumbarda Club 100-Year Anniversary, 1917-2017.” The first 100 attendees will each receive this commemorative gift.

Catered Luncheon Buffet

Sveti Roko (Saint Roy) is the patron saint of Lumbarda. Every year the Lumbarda Club honored Sveti Roko Dan (St. Roy’s day) in mid-August with a gathering and a feast. The feast was prepared by the members themselves up until about ten years ago, when Ned Buratovich became president. Previous president, MaryAnn Kriletech had a well-organized team of family members, neighbors and friends who worked all through the day (and the night before) to treat us to a “home cooked” barbecue feast. Ned had no such team, nor the energy, nor the culinary skill to continue with that tradition, so he made the switch to  having our annual Sveti Roko gathering catered.

For our 100th Sveti Roko commemoration, our committee (after some discussion) agreed to use the same caterers who have supplied us with hearty, healthy and tasty meals for the last six years, Pacific Fine Food Catering.

Our Venue in Alameda

We will meet this year in Alameda again, at the Naval Air Museum. Yes, it is not a very picturesque building (as the photo clearly shows) but we do get the entire second floor banquet facilities to ourselves, there is plenty of free parking and wheelchair access via elevator. Also, we have negotiated a very favorable rental arrangement with the management, so this will be our meeting place for our 100th Sveti Roko Dan.

News & Announcements

Printed invitations have been mailed out to the membership at the start of June. Our committee has decided to have this year, our 100th year, be the last year with the traditional, annual Sveti Roki gathering. Therefore, we have not charged any per-family dues this year. The cost is for the meal only, so please join us for this one last time.

Our Treasurer, Claudia Weichert, who managed Lumbarda Club finances for near 30 years, fell critically ill and has been hospitalized for several months. Ned Buratovich will step in as acting treasurer for the remainder of 2017 as we work out the financial logistics for our 100th year.

Please keep Claudia in your prayers.

Claudia Weichert, Lumbarda Club Treasurer
